CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
A charge ;of cruelty to seven pig* was preferred against; James" McDonald, of Ohariu Valley, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Tho proceed-; ings-.were' 'taken by Captain Jamea Henry,, inspector, to tho Society ior the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and tho society .-was represented hj Mr.lt. H. Webb. Evidence -was given that seven, piga were put in a box too small for tiicir comfort, were unable to lie down oir turn round, there- being only hvc inches of space for each p)g. they were, in a iiltliv condition,. and-througn lioin" exposed* to wind and ram were .in a sorry plight. .. There wa s .no.food or .water about, nor had tho animals any chance of setting any, as the box was much overcrowded. lho defendant said his sons had sold the pigs, and they were left 'at JNgahauranga on Tuesdav morning, August 6th; to be- lifted tho same morning by tho purchaser ' The box was provided by the purchaser, "and" in ordinary circum-stances--the pigs would have -been in-its for about-two -hours.,.onl.v, hut Mr RaveiC ""'the purchaser," failed to nn the animals-, during-.Uiemoi-iiiuc ■Mr F.V." Frascr,' "S.M., 'said th»> case was not a very serious..one,-and the circumstances had _ been causeo through a misunderstanding. The defendant was convicted, ftnc ordered to pay -C2 lis costs.
