SAVAGE CLUB
PATRIOTIC CONCERT AT TOWJt
TUo open entertainments of the Wellington Savage Club have always proved attractive, and it was not surprising that there was a fairly full audience at the Town Hall last night on the occasion of an entertainment for patriotic p apposes. Had further publicity been Riven to the concert, the attendance no doubt would have been stil] larger. The programme was ample and thoroughly satisfying. It was opened by the club orchestra, under Savage ilcComish, with the popular "Light Cavalry" overture of Suppe, and as a commencement to - the second part the Parisian. March "Cabaret Capers" was played. An instrumental number ot a novel character was a woodwind quartette (two flutes, •clarionet, and bassoon). Two operatic numbers, well arranged by Savage F. Wolfgang, were played. The experiment was marred by faulty intonation on the part of at least one of the performers. Among the vocalists who stood out prominently last night were Savages (J. I Austin Blackie, .frank Charlton, and Hugh Wright. The first-inentioned, who has an. exceptionally pleaeant-toncd tenor voice, was heard in.the '"Prelude" from Landon Konald's "Cycle of Life," with "Laurette" (Gayne) and "Alary of Argylo" as encores. Sir Charlton gave a very fine rendering of "Kritu' (Ven.lv supplementing this operatic excerpt with Sanderson's song, "Out of tuo Mist." Jlr Wright gave "Thy Foe," with "A Song of Love" ae an encore. Savage -Norman Aitken was as good as nsnal with his musical monologue "By the Yukon Trail," and Savage A. W. Ilussell provoked much merriment with his "Deathless Army" and "Good-bye.'* Savage W. Foster engaged attention as piano soloist. Conjuring was supplied by Savage K. U. Oakley, a lightning sketch of a comic order following by Savages King, liastings, and Kelly. Savage L. C. Barnes was heard with considerable pleasure in "Danny Deaver" (Damrosch). His was not tho least effective vocal item. A Savale Club chorus lending variety was "Who Sails with Drake" (Chudleigh-Candish), A highly original farce, entitled "Na Poo," brought a very successful entertainment to a conclusion. In thi« Messrs W. H. L- Cooper, A. W. Russell, Paul S Latham, F.'O. Twiss. and Nor. man Aitken took part. Savage Frank Thoinac. acted as accompanist.
