The - eighth annual concert in connection with the Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club was held at the Town -Hall, Lower, ..Hutt,:,,last everung, . nnd - proved an immense, success. .hhe halll was crowded, the ,audience, including the uover:-.<>r-Generai and Lady Liverpool and the lion, and Jin? T. M. Wilford. On the arrival of the vice-regal party the Countess-was-presented with a bouquet by Hiss; Zita Chapman. On this occasion- the proceeds wore in- aid of the Sod. Cross Copper Trail.:: w.--i , The annual, gatherings of -the -dub for some years-past-have been -eventful. This one was' particularly so. During the interval Mr Wilford made a special appeal in relation to a sale, of a basket of sweets supplied bv a wounded - soldier, and dlUd was thus realised. In, addition, X2o - was realised from a copper trail appeal in the corridor of the nail. The entertainment for this patriotic purpose was the .means of drawing in several hundred pounds. The management of-the concert was, as on former dceasions. under the general- direction, of Mr ,8.. J. Hill, and great: credit is - due to - this gentleman for. the completeness of all the , arrangements. and ' the unusual excellence of the entertainment' provided. ' Each part of the programme was opened by a selection by - the -Orphans’ - Club - Orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr H. Moschini.' I'he compositions performed were- “Dorothy" . (Cellier).' and “Slavonic Rhapsody” .(Friedman). Encores were demanded in each instance. Mr • Moschini also supplied a clarionet solo—“Alicante" - (Le Thiere)—a much, appreciated item. 1 * . ’ -The vocal soloists included Miss May Chatwin. Miss Mina Caldow, Mr Herbert F. Wood and Mr Frank Charlton. Such a. quartet alone cave a pillar of strencth to the programme. ■ Miss Chat-, win sang. “No. No. No’’ (Tito Mattel) with a particular charm and on being

encored.. added “Bird of Jnne.” , Misa Caldow gave in her usual highly axtistio style ‘‘Sink Red Sun” (Teresa del Eiego) and, “Waiata Maori" (Alfred Hill). As encores she gained much applause with “Gherrv ; Song" and “My Ships.” ■Mr Wood was especially effective in “Roses, of Picardy" (Haydn Wood) and being encored gave "Love and Laughter." Mr Charlton chose as his selection “Bri Tu" (Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera”). which ..he interpreted in a most praiseworthy fashion with correct Italian Encores v were the, rule of the evening. His was a beautiful melodv bv Alfred Hill “When I Awake.” In addition Mr Norman Aitken renewed his popularity with his musical . monologue “Bv the - Yukon Trail” (Hayes) and a humorous encore. Mr R-. Meates was heard to advantage in “Drinking!" 'Mr Albert Bussell gave with the utmost satisfaction two humor, otis songs—“l’m Cuthbert’’ (Bchally) and “The Deathless Army” and was particularly funnv in “Full Down the. Blind.” An especially appreciated number was an operative quintet verv effectively delivered" bv Misses -Chatwin, Caldow, B. (J. Hill, Charlton, and B. Meates. "Mr* G‘. Hartshorn T attained a high level ot excellence as an - elocutionist with “Baa quita” (an incident of the Franco-Prut sian War) and “How shall 1 accept Him.” She has a subtle soft dramatis note in her voice and was most, on?, thusiosticallv -encored. • One of i. jif’ encore numbers, t ,,was, ( .‘fThe ...Bagpipes.
