VARIETY COMPANY AT GRAND OPERA HOUSE. Lee Toy Chung and bis company, o* entertainers commenced, a season at tn* Grand Opera House last night. There was a Targe audience, which thorough* ly enjoyed the show. The .company consists of a magician in Lee Toy . Chung. Professor D Almaine, ■ a bjpnotist, and a few fill-up -turns. Lee T y Chung gives a brief and clever display of magic, featuring a rather startling finale, entitled "The Birth of Flags. In this the magician completely amas» ed his audience by eating Tumps of « blazing substance that resembled, wadding. Evidently Lee Toy Chung’s mternal organs must be made of asbestos, for after he had 'eaten hm fill Tm com. menced to blow from bxs mouth bias u of sparks and smoke. Finally he more wadding into iiis mouth.- ancl t commenced to disgorge many y at “ s coloured ribbon, which, m tunv,resoi « -.(ed- themselves into many ; huge ~ The magician showed-some skill .in other illusions, which were.,carried’cut w-ith -cards* efcga, handkerchiefs, .and the like. His turn was made, effective . with Oriental scenic effects. The other big item was provided b> ■Professor D'Almaine, the hypnotists He issued the customary invitation tj yotuur men to "step on stage* and then he got down to business, ten 'young men who responded.: to his invitation were’ apt pupils. hands of the hypnotist they exhibited the most absurd behaviour. The. nudi enc© shrieked and. shrieked wwh .wugnter. In fact, not so. much laughvnS has been heard for a long time at tut Opera House. One time the sublet* would be searching lor gold. which tut hypnotist then transferred into fleasImmediately the subjects hastened to rid themselves of the fleas they imagined had taken possession of them. Th« spectacle of these youths struggling to free '. themselves from the inmginarjpests was truly ludicrous. Then the subjects were transported to the ballroom to waltz seriously .about tbe with imaginary partners. Not content with waltzing, . some indulged in lovemaking, and the audience, roared the louder. Professor D’Almamo gave « startling exposition with one of bis subjects. Under the. influence of the .professor’s power this subject was placed across two chairs, while four men, whose weight totalled about 40 stone, stood on his suspended body. ~ As for the remainder of the programme, a humorous sketch, entitled "The Irish Doctor," was given by three members of Abe company. Mis» Sadie La Trobe, a sonbrette, received a great hearing; Miss, Euleen La ■ Sals warbled some ballads; Mr Percy Carl sane some comic songs; and Tartu, Georgie" was the title of a ventrnoq'rhe ''company will appear here fothree more nights.
