CATHOLIC FEDERATION

ANNUAL MEETING OF DOMINIONCOUNCIL, The sixth annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Catholic Federation was held at St. Patrick’s Hall, Bouloott street, yesterday. The delegates present were: —Auckland, Very Rev. Father Cahill, Messrs Molioy and Bonner; Wellington, Very Rev. Father O’Connell, Rev. Father Hurley, Adm., Major Halpin, Messrs Nolan and Luxford; Christchurch, Rev. Father Kerloy, Messrs Doolan and Ryan; Dunedin, Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., Rev. Father Foley, Mr D. L. Poppelwell (president). His Grace Archbishop O’Shea and a number of the local clergy were present. His Grace woloo-ned tne visiting delegates, and expressed great pleasure at the material progress made during the past year by the federation. He urged upon delegates the great importance of the work of social study, particularly in relation to the economic problems with which the Dominion would be faced at the conclusion of the war. His Grace spoke of the splendid work being dono.by Wellington Social Study Clubs, the meetings of which were open to all. and he hoped that other members of the community would attend and learn the Catholic view point in such matters.

Tho report and balance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory position. The financial statement in connection with the Catholic Field Service Fund testified to the large amount of good being carried out by the chaplains in hospital ships, transports the home camps, and at the fronts in France and Palestine. The plans of the new Catholic Institute at Tauherenikau were shown and appreciated. Ihe Rev. Chaplain Daly attended, and gave an interesting address on the needs of the soldiers at tho English training camps and hospitals. The constitution of the federation was altered, giving more direct representation to diocesan councils. A comprehensive scheme of scholarships to secondary -schools was adopted, the details of management being left to the four diocesan councils. Hearty appreciation was expressed with regard to tho services of Mr O. Girling-Butcher, who occupied the position of secretary , and organiser from the inception of the federation, and has relinquished office owing to ill-health. The vacancy caused by this resignation was filled by tho appointment of Miss Girling-Butcher. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows;—President, Mr D. L. Poppelwell (re-elected); vice-presi--dents. Very Rev.. Fathers Cahill and Kerley, Major T. P. Halpin; hon. treasurer. Mr P. D.. Hoskins (re-elected).
