LOCAL EXECUTIVE .COMMITTEE AIEETS.

A meeting of the executive cpmmit- : too of the Wellington Mar Belief Association was held yesterday dherc were present Messrs I/. O. H. lnpi> (in the chair), ilutclioson, U. smnchife J. Lewis, and A. Macintosh. ’ The report i.f the applications com- ; mitteo was as follows: — The committee met on ten occasions since last meeting of the executive, aud dealt with 2/1 applications. As cho result principally of the decision of the committee to discontinue the practice of advancing against pay, as from the date amended, allowances became payable (January Ist, 1918) there has been a reduction of 10 per cent, in the number of claims dealt witii during, tho first six mouths of this year, as compared with the same period of 1917. Thi s has effected f very slight reduction in the activitiei of the committee, that is more, thar compensated for by tho extra work involved in dealing with the increasing number of claims from returned soldiers desirous of re-establishing themselves in civil occupations. During the past month we* have started one man in a carrying business, hare assisted j two soldier settlers, have enabled three applicants to re-establish their -domestic positions, have sent several to employment, and assisted two to take up courses of vocational training, whilst several other claims of a similar nature are still under action. Direct financial assistance is, ol course, being still rendered to the de- ; pendents of soldiers serving overseas, ns well as to returned men and their relations —several of the latter, acting upon our advice, have proved successful in obtaining a reconsideration ot their case by the Pensions Board—aud the number of claims we receive, in which another society is responsible, being steadily on the increase, it will be understood the work of the applications committee, whilst being practically without limit of variety, is fully ‘ as arduous as ever it has been. The report of the. finance commute* showed tho balance at the bank in the war funds account at £378 los 6d, and .in tho imprest account at £3 14s 4d. The statement of total funds as at July 31st showed investments as £73,015 16 s lOd, current accounts i,. . 9s 4d, and petty cash £2O. The expenditure for the month was £lOls 12r lid, and income £370 15s 2d.
