SILT AT WANGANUI
Tie upper end of tie Wanganui Town wiarf bertiage is silting up, and vessels iaving occasion to discharge or lead there have touched bottom. Shipmasters have complained of this for some time past. On Monday afternoon, at a time when there should have been plenty of water at the spot, the Storm, moving lower down the wharf, encountered the sandbank, and it took some skilful manoeuvring to shift her and eventually moor her again. According to shipmasters "the berthage is only a gutter, and a shallow one at that.” It is stated that another shallow has' appeared abreast of the new slip. Doubtless the Wanganui Harbour Board will lose no time in sotting the dredge to; work at these spots. Some time back an experiment was tried in the way of digging what might bo termed a deep "hole" slightly above the wharves, and this bad the effect of maintaining for a cconsiderablo time the depth where it had been dredged. The “hole” has since filled up, and the old trouble is manifesting itself again.
