FLOODS AT GORE
CITIZENS’ WORKING BEE. Press Association. GORE, June 26. Citizens o& every trade and calling, armed with spades and shovels, took the law into their own handg yesterday afternoon and proceeded to prevent the water coming through the railway culvert, damage to which was erased by the last two floods at Gore. The work v%aa completed during the evening, and by the morning the flood water had almost disappeared from tho town. Up to the present the Railway Department will not permit the erection of any bank at the culvert. It previously indicated that it would take forcible stepe to prevent any action being taken.. .Later. A largely-attended public meeting was held to-day of business people and property owners to discuss the question of taking steps to prevent water coming through the railway culvert at Jacobs town and flooding the town. A resolution was passed;—.“That this meeting endorse® the action of those citizens of Gore who yesterday assumed the responsibility of closing the opening in the railway reserve at Jacobs town-, through - which flood waters entered and overflowed the business part of the town; it pledges itself to co-operate with tho council in bringing the matter before the, Minister for Railways, and urges the necessity for urgent action, on tho -part of the department to keep the culvert at Jacobs town closed or also provide a floodgate.” *
