HOROWHENUA NOTES
From Our Own Correspondent. OTAKI, Monday. The Red Cross shop at Otaki on Saturday was largely patronised. It was under the supervision of tho members of the Women's National League (local branch), who arranged for several for valuable prizes. As a result a considerable sum of money was raised for patriotic purposes. ___A "hard-up" social was held at Tc Horo on Friday night for patriotic purposes. Tho gathering was large, especially considering the unfavourable weather, and the costumes in many cases were unique.
Captain Percy Shelley (20th Reinforcement) whose death is reported from France, is a brother to Mr J. Skelley, of Otaki (representative for Messrs Veitch and Allen). Deceased was well known in the Wellington, Wairarapa, and Manawatu districts. and was a general favourite with a)who knew him. Lieutenant Skollej was recently invalided home. Sergeant SkcJley is still on service: Mr J Skelley, who has a son also at the front, goes up for medical examination on Wednesday next.
The new building for the Bank of New Zealand, when complete, will *o tho most prepossessing building in the district. It is of two storeys, neatly and tastefully designed, built in brick, and a decided acquisition to the coast. Tho finishing "touches to the building will bo added in the course of six weeks.
The Otaki Maori Racing Club held a meeting to-day, chiefly for passing accounts in connection' with it* recent meeting. It is understood that the credit from the race meeting is i». record one.
