MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The City Council met last evening, when the following were present'j.m Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) and Councillors J. E. Fitzgerald, W. T. Hildreth, B. A. Wright, J. Castle. W. J. Thompson, C. B. Norwood, J. O. Sharland, L. McJxeu zie, A. Veitch. A. B. Atkinson. W. H. Bennett, G. Frost, W. H. P, Barber, ii. F. Luokie. The Koseneath and Oriental Bay Electors’ Association is to be informed that its request for the removal of the dangerous point on the roadway at the lowe» end of Carlton Gore road, Eoseneath cannot be acceded to, as the city enginees points out that nothing shou.d Co clout to interfere with the bank or endanger its stability. The by-laws committee reported that it had certified to the Department oi Labour that the amended petition from the occupiers of book-sellers’ shops requesting the fixing of tho hours of closing of such shops, contains the signatures of a majority of the occupiers oi such shops in Wellington. An applicant for permission to ereci a sign on premises in Courtenay place to advertise a certain picture theatre situated in another street, is to ho informed that he will require to license the sign as a hoarding, and pay fees accordingly. He will require also to ic duce the height of the sign from three feet to two feet, to comply with the city by-laws. The request of the Hataitai Bathinj Club to have their bathing shed ai Evans Bay supplied free of charge with fresh water, was agreed to, provided tin amount consumed does not exceed tin average yearly quantity registered tj meter during the past two years. A suggestion for the adoption of c patent life saving apparatus for use oi the city beaches was not entertained, but the writer is to ho thanked for his suggestion.
The finance and property committee iecommended that the suni of money necessary for the construction of a connecting road between Hanson street and Stakes street he provided on the current year’s estimates. The land required for this access has been already purchased and arrangements will be made for the disposal of the balance of the acre after the roadway is formed. The recommendation was adopted. It was decided to make provision on this year’s estimates for the construction of public conveniences for both sesos at the Oriental Bay tramway terminus.
