MAY DAY

LOCAL CELEBRATION

To celebrate May Day a musical “social” was held under tho auspices of tho ‘Wellington Social Democratic patty in the Alexandra Hall, Abel Smith street, last evening. Over 200 were present, including representatives from tho following organisations: Tho Wellington L.R.C., the Trades and Labour Council, tho Drivers’ Union, Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union, tho Seamen’s Union, the Storemen’s Union, Painters’ Union, Hotel Workers’ Union, Soft Goods Employees Union, Plumbers’ Union, Dairy Workers’ Union. Tramway Employees’ Union, A.S.R.S. (Thorndon branch), Plasters’ .Union, Furniture Workers’ Union, Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Bookbinders' Union, Federation of Freezing Workers, Housewives’ Union, Women’s International League, Wellington North Labour party, Brooklyn Labour party, and Wellington South Labour party. The following resolution, proposed by Mr J. Thom, and seconded by Mr T. Brindle, was carried unanimously: “That this May Day meeting of Socialists and trade unionists of Wellington reaffirms its belief in the identity of interest of the workers of tho world, irrespective of race, creed, or colour, Rs faith in the final triumph of international working-class solidarity, and an the coming establishment of tho socialisation of tho means of wealth production. It sends fraternal greetings to tho workers of all countries, and expresses its readiness to co-operate with them--in their efforts to end pre--sent suicidal war, and to establish a peace based upon reason and justice.” Tho toast of the “Labour Party” was proposed by Mr J. Glover (national secretary of the New Zealand Labour party),' and responded to by Mr A. Parlano (president of the Wellington Labour Representation Committee). Tho vocal and musical items were provided by tho Now Zealand Variety Entertainers’ Club, and tho evening’s proceedings closed with dancing, tho Now Zealand Variety Entertainers’ orchestra providing the music. '
