Deceased was a member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, showing great promise in his profession. He was a winner of a large number of architectural competitions m Australia. Ho was deeply interested in the social condUions and housing of his fellow workers, and hud devoted a considerable amount of time to town-plan-ning and education with a view to bettering those conditions. He was a clever cartoonist amd was a member and last year president of the Wellington Social Democratic Party. Mr Harold Beauchamp (chairman of th« Bank of New Zealand) is on a visit to Sydney. Ite will attend the annual meet, ing of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, of which he is a director in New Zealand.
Lieutenant son of Mr (X B. Daniell, of Masterton, who received a severe wound in the leg, will return to Masterton in a few weeks. A Press Association message from London states that Lord Islington, formerly Governor of New Zealand, has undergone a serious operation and his condition is critical.
The Bov. W. Keay. lately assistant to the vicar of St. Mark’s Church, 'Wellington, will he inducted next Sunday as -vicar -of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Khybor Pass. He is to ■ succeed the late Bov. A..H. Colville. Mr P. G. Le Grove, who is an inmate of Nurse Lucas’s private hospital, Willis street, who had his right-leg amputated, is reported to be progressing favourably.
Lieutenant IV. Hogg, who was prior to his enlistment on the staff of Messrs Chapman. Skerrett, Tripp, and Blair, was selected in February last for four months’ special duty in England. Mr Charles Doherty, Tinwald, has been advised by cable that his son. Lieutenant Percy George Doherry, has been awarded the Military Cross. Lieutenant Doherty, who left "with tho Main Body, went through,, tho Gallipoli campaign, and' is at present on active service in Palestine.
Mr G. Allport, secretary of the Marine Department,, who has been- visiting Auckland on departmental business, returned, to Wellington yesterday, afternoon. The Rev. R. S. Gray, of tbo Hanover sheet Baptist Church,‘Dunedin, who has been taking a leading part in tho Diamond Jubilee celebrations of. the Auckland BaptiM Tabernacle, has arrived in Palmerston North, and after conferring with sundry members and ex-members of the local Baptist Church, and attending a conference with its present members, left for Welling ton by tho Main) Trunk express. • Mr Gray expoeta to revisit Palinerston -asain in August. Prior to returning to Featherstort on Monday evening to rejoin his company, Bombardier Clarence Crawford was presented with a care of pipes from tno members of the Christchurch Orchestral Society. Mr E, A. Horne, when making the presentation, referred to the valuable assistance given by tho young soldier musician to tho society’s and patriotic concerts, and said that Bombardier Crawford, as un artist in the. musical world, was a credit to New Zealand. Tho soldier suitably respondent Tho Sev. *r. B. Oocrtz, vicar of Holy Trinity, Port Chalmers, for the past six years, has, states the Dunedin correspondent of the “Lyttelton Times,’ 1 resigned his pastorate in order to join the colours as a private. His congregation presented him with a well-filled purse of sovereigns, in addition to gifts from boy choristers and Sunday School children
Mr L. C. Hunan, who, prior to tho war. was private secretary to Dr T. IT. A. Vnlintine. Inspector-General of Hospitals, and lately has been acting as on gamsing secrctisjy to the Returned Soldiers’ Memorial Club campaign in Otago, has resigned his position.
