AUTUMN BLOOMS

SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION AT HUTT,

One of the most successful autumn exhibitions of cut blooms, pot plants, fruit, and vegetables was opened on Wednesday afternoon by tho Hon. T. M. Wiiford, Minister for Justice. The attendance during the afternoon and evening was tar above the average of past autumn shows, and -.articular interest was taken in the exhibits. > HOME INDUSTRIES.

A feature of the show, and an oul’ktanding one. was the exhibit of home industries -shown by G. A, Chapman. These comprise a collection of preserves of all kinds, cakes, confectionary, sauces, essences, liqueurs, champagne, grape, blackberry, and other wines, extracts of ginger, cloves, etc. It was a unique display. AWARDS AND CERTIFICATES.

R.H.S. silver medals were awarded F. Westbury for a collection of vegetables. Bronze medals to T. “Waugh for a collection of fruit and pot plants, W. B. Hardy for a collection of cut flowers, and A. McMillan for cut flowers and pof plants, while H- Poole received a certificate of merit for a collection of chrysanthemums and pot plants, and A. Hardham one for a collection of pears. DISPLAYS.

Besides G. A. Chapman's exhibit, H. Poole'had a stand'loaded with choice pot plants and begonias, T. Waugh one of fruit and pot plants, W. B. Hardy and A. McMillan cut flowers. F. Westbury. who excels in the growing of vegetables, had a wonderful collection of upwards of 50 varieties, grown to perfection. . CHRYSANTHEMUMS. '

The display of chrysanthemums was considered by judges to be the best yet seen in the Wellington province. A. W. Compton, a Hutt grower, was awarded the championship for his exhibit of a perfect Japanese variety named Mrs W. Deickham. Tho bloom was yellow in colour, beautifully grown, and measured 7\ inches in depth by 7 inches in width. PRIZE LIST. Chrysanthemums (open class).—The following secured prizes.—R. Pointon, F. Westbury (9). A. W. Compton (2), W. Slater H. Poole (5), and J. J. Kerslake (if: amateur class —J. Cottle (3) and F. Westbury’* points prize. Mrs H. S- Cuming (3). Mrs E. Payne, W. Slater, and Mrs W. B. White. Pot Plants.—H. Poole was tho principal winner in this section, and for tuberous begonias, G. A. Chapman being also a luocessful exhibitor. Collection of Ferns and Cut Flowers.— Mrs B. Payne and H. Poole divided the honours.

Fruit and Vegetables (open class). —3. S. Mason. C. B. Eobinson, Miss L. 9piiman (<T). J. Cottle (2) A. J. Hobbs (5), and.S. G. Beeach; amateur class—J. Cottle (7), S. S. Mason. Miss Stephenson, J. Sheppard, J. Davidson, and Mrs J. AMcDongall. Dahlias.—The champion bloom in this class was awarded to T. Waugh out of a number of competitors. In the open class T. Waugh secured six first prizes, and the other successful competitors were H. Poole (2), B. Miller, apd Mrs F. K. Porteous. In the class for amateurs the price winners'were J, Ball, W, Slater, and Mrs F. K. Porteous. Decorative Glasses. Mrs Westbury, Mrs Hendry (4), Mrs J. W. F. McDourall. Miss Hobbs (5). Mrs H. S. Cumlings. Mrs .7. A. McDongall H. Burton, Miss B. Hobbs. Miss P. Hobbs. Mrs A. J. Hobbs Jean Hendry (2), and Harold MeDougall.
