The Poherua left Westport at 8 o'clock yesterday morning with a full cargo of coal for Wellington. It i« reported that freights for general cargo hy tramp steamers trading between Japan and Australia have been increased from 180 s to 250 s a ton. The Kowhai is to leave New Plymouth to-day for Wellington. The vessel will load transhipments at this port for Lyttelton, and will sail for south this ingThe Kamo, for greymouth, and the Komata for WestporT, which left Wellington last evening, are to load again for Wellington. . The Defender, which arrived at Wellington last evening from Lyttelton, is to sail on the return trip to-morrow. The vessel is due back here on Tuesday. According to the Christchurch “Sun' 1 the Lyttelton dock will not be available for steamers for three or four months, ns the Lilia is shortly to go into dock for that period. A large number of tourists from the north made the round trip to the West Coast Sounds and lighthouses by the Government steamer Hinemoa. During her presence in the south the Hinomo. took Mr McLcecc. the new officer ir charge of Puysegur Point lighthouse, to Preservation Inlet, and toot, off Mr Pierce, who is now at the Somes Islam’ lighthouse. gantries at Port Pirie a Howard Smith steamer was taken into the Federal Deck to load ore. Everything was ready for a start in the morning, but when tho men came to work they demanded 18s a day. They were informed that before this could bo paid it would be necessary to receive instructions from headquarters. The consequence was that tho work was not proceeded with, and the vessel had been lying idle in the F'ederal Dock all day.
