In consequence of the shipping situa tion (says a Sydney paper;, it is an. tioipatod that there will shortly be widespread distress among the waterside workers of Sydney, involving well over a thousand men. For weeks past the outlook has been anything but favourable. and the withdrawal of vessels from the inter-State trade will still further affect the waterside workers. Mr Me Tntosh, secretary of the new Wharf Labourers’ Union, stated that there was nob enough work for the men at times, and about 800 of the casuals were experiencing distress. Of this number about 200 are men who do other odd work, end do not depend entirely on wharf labouring for ft living.
