(By “Tohungn.”)

The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club commences its Cup nioot.ug to-morrow, and. given tine wcatlier, the .unction should bo a successful one. .Most .n----tcresb will centre in tthe Hawke s oay Cup, wherein several high-class hand - cap horses are engaged. The Longlauds Hurdles has a held of fourteen, most of them being use to the fences. The recent exploits ol Lord Ainslio would suggest that ho has more than a possible chance of gaming distinction in the race. He won castly enough at Keihling, but when fiteplied out at the Munawatu meeting on the first day ho clouted each fence heavily. On the second day he ran a good race, but bad to give way to a better horse, Paul Moore. After Lord Ainslio, Otarn should rum as well rts anything, and the disappointing Toki should not be forgotten by those who have followed him up. The second race on the programme 13 the Mangatar.vta Hurdles, of one mile aud three-quarters. The field is not a heavy me in quantity or quality. Bon Revo heads the list with 11. 0, and should be equal io the situation. St. Elmn, if caught in a galloping nv od, should not find his 9.7 too heavy over the journey.

The Nursery Handicap has a good field, some smart youngsters being matched. Tho top-weight, Killowen, has a recommendation, but may find Karo (the aamo strain as Impediment) a hot proposition. Palm Oil and Cherry Mart have better credentials than most of the others.

Coolpan heads a field of twenty-four in the Poukawa Handicap, with 9.3, and mayhap he will head more ' han head him. Formline appears to be in winning vein just now, and should run prominently with 8.5. Skedaddle has not been weighted out of the race with 6-12.

The Cup will prove a hard race for the punters. Jinny of the horses en-\ gaged have been doing well lately, and tho weights orb 50 evenly adjusted that it is hard to find even a possible. On recent performances the Trenthamtraincd filly Bonnie Maid (8.2) must ho given a look in. Menelaus ran so well behind Desert Gold in tho Awapuni Gold Cup that his success with 9.1 would not appear beyond tho bounds of possibility. He was running on well''at Awapuni. Impediment, with 8.2, cannot bo overlooked in the race, any more than, Tdka, Trial, or Estland. Bonnie Maid will have to put on all the finery in the wardrobe.

Taking Palmerston running into consideration, Livland and Turpenito would appear to have a pull over the others engaged in the Maiden Pace. Vermillion, who ran a good second to Astor in the Welter Paco at Palmerston on the second day, appears in the Autumn Handicap with 7.3, Sweet Corn heading tho list with 9.5. The All Red mare should make a good showing. Glorify has 7.12, which he should not find difficult to carry round tho course. Kiltes s is in good heart just now.

The hardest race of the day will he the Porangahau Handicap. The topweight, Croesus, must command a lot of respect, despite hia 10.8. In fact, he appears to have it on all the others, unless one of the lightweights hop in. Certainly Lady Black, with but 7.9 to carry, may prove his undoing, but it should be a good match. Hymestra is conceding Croesus but 81 bs, and ho is no dunce.
