LAUNCH ON THE ROCKS. Last Saturday evening two motor boats at the boat harbour, Sumner, near Christchurch. broke adrift. One ot them, the Ariki, drifted out to sea with the ebbing tide, and tho other was stranded in the harbour. At an early hour on Sunday morning the Ariki was seen making for the shore, and the lifeboat crew sought to rescue it. There was a heavy swell on, and before the lifeboat could reach her the Ariki was driven against the outer wall of the harbour and on to tho boulder beach holes being stove- in on either side. , Tho crew of the lifeboat hauled tho boat ashore and left it on the road near tho slip. The incident gave rise to a false rumour that tho lifeboat and crew had been driven on the rocks. THE JOHN. The steamer John which left Wellington yesterday afternoon for Wanganui, is to proceed" thence to Nydia Bay to load timber for Lyttelton. Tho vessel will call in at Wellington on Friday to pick up general cargo for Lyttelton and Oatnaru; and is to get away on Saturday. MONOWAI'S MOVEMENTS. Instead of coming direct from Auckland to Wellington as first arranged, the MonoWivi. to leave Auckland on Saturday, will call at Napier (omitting Gisborne), and is due at Wellington on Tuesday morning. Tho vessel is to sail from here on Tuesday evening for Lyttelton and Dunedin. THE ANNIE HILL. It has now been found necessary to strip, re-fasten and re-caulk the Annie Hill, whioh has had a lengthy stay on the slit) at Lyttelton. The original intentions were to repair the topsides and fit a new keelson and false keel, but on an inspection being- • made it was found that the coppering on the bottom of the vessel . needed Tenewing. She will probably come off the slip next week to have her two masts refitted, afterwards entering the New Zealand coastal trade.

THE HINEMOA. The Hinemoa arrived back at Wellington yesterday afternoon from her Tound trip to the South Island lighthouses -via Westport and Tho Brothers. Captain Bollons Teports that generally fine weather, prevailed, but one or two hard westerly gales were encountered on the West Coast. This morning the Hinemoa will go across to Somes Island to land Principal-keeper Pearce with his wife and family from Puysegur Point lighthouse. The Hinemoa will leave Wellington or, Monday night for The Brothers lighthouse Karori rock beacon, Jackson head beacon, and the Okuri Point light to replenish the reservoirs. Two buoys will also be overhauled and relaid at French Pass. LYTTELTON HARBOUR FERRY. Messrs Rhind and Co. are the successful tenderers for conducting the ferry service between Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour. The service has been taken over for a period of two years by the company, who have purchased the Borough Council's motor launch Ruahine, and who, it is understood, will utilise the steamer Purau to assist in busy times. CUSTOMS HOLIDAY TO-MOEROW. There will be no business transacted by the Customs Department to-morrow (Anzao Day), which will bo observed as a Government holiday. ..NIKAU.MISSES THREE TRIPS. The Anchor Company's steamer Nikau will be laid up at Nelson throughout next week for her annual overhaul. Alter leaving Wellington next week for Nelson she, will not reappear here until next Tuesday week. The Kaitoa will remain in her usual running' between Wellington. Nelson, and Motueka, RIPPLE SAILS TO-DAY. Johnston and Company advise that owing tip to-morrow being a holiday at Napier the steamer Ripple is now fixed to leave Wellington at 5 o'clock this evening for Akitio, Napier and Gisborne. The vessel will receive cargo for all these ports, although it was first announced that she would not receive for Akitio. The Eipple's intended trip to Picton has been postponed. She is due back at Wellington on Sunday from Gisborne.
