IN PALESTINE

GREAT WORK OF ANZACS CAVALRY ACHIEVEMENTS UNSURPASSED IN HISTORY. By Telegraph—Pros* Association— Copyright Austral lau and N.Z. Cable A»«nolatlon. (Received January 16, 11.30 p.m.) 9 LONDON, January 15. The story of Australia’s and Now Zealand’s share in the capture of Palestine is coming out, revealing feats of combat, endurance, and horsemanship worthy to rank with the greatest cavalry achievements in history. General Allenby daringly played for the highest stakes, and risked everything on a great cavalry coup, wherein the Light Horse and New Zealanders were the leaders, backed bs the splendid Yeomanry. Lack of water alone prevented the capture of tlie Turkish army earlier and the fall of Jerusalem. An officer from Palestine, interviewed, said ho was lost in admiration of tho feats of the Light Horse. They had lived for two years like blacks, in holl-holes, tho monotony varied by occasional patrol encounters. The only furlough was to Egypt, whereof they were utterly fed Up. Many suffered septic sores, but wore never dispirited, and they were overjoyed when the time for action came.

The most notable feature of the campaign was the extraordinarily long ride s in waterless country with short rations, horses and men suffering seriously. The Turks fought bravo retreating actions. General Chauvel’s leadership was "supremely good. The story of the'great charge of the Fourth Regiment at Beersheba under General Grant reads like an epic. The men dashed in with bayonets after a thirtymile night march and fought all day victoriously. PATROL ACTIVITY AT SEVERAL POINTS. Aus, and N.Z. Cable Assn, and RoutoT. Anman station, and Kedjaz railway, with good results. ■ . - There is considerable patrol activity on the Jerusalem sector. We raided Mukhina's village, taking prisoners.
