SHANNON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Monday. A well-attended meeting of the Second Division . League was held last , night. The resignation of Mr Nicholson, president of the league, who was drawn in the first ballot, was received. On the motion of Mr Fargher, seconded by Mr Murray, the resignation was accepted with regret. Both speakers referred to the keen interest Mr Nicholson took in the league and wished him a. safe return to Shannon. Mr Nicholson suitably responded. Mr J. H. Fargher was elected president. The matter of increasing the membership was discussed. It was resolved to write Mr Armstrong, Wellington, asking him if he could arrange for some ante speaker for Shannon to increase tho enthusiasm in the league. The resolution passed at the Hast meeting that dhe Government should, bo urged to take immediate steps to prevent enemy aliens from acquiring land or businesses which may have been vacated by reservists called up for active service, and, further, to prevent them iin any case, at least for the duration of the war, from acquiring land or businesses, was discussed by the meeting. A letter was received from the Federation of the Now Zealand Second Division League, stating that a committee has been set up by the Wellington executive to obtain evidence on the enemy alien question, and asking the meeting for evidence on matters affecting the interest of reservists than can be supplied. It was resolved to write the Federation League that the matter is receiving the earnest consideration of tho members.

An endeavour is being made to secure the services of the Palmerston North Brass Band for the patriotic carnival, not tho Weraroa Boys’ Bapd, as mentioned in a previous report. Levin has sent in a challenge for next Wednesday for the feathers recently iron by a Shannon rink from Foxton. The following will represent the local rink: —Shaukland, Boris, Fargher, and Stephenson (s).

The cricket match arranged between (Palmerston North High School and Shannon was played-here last Saturday. Although the scores were small, some good cricket was witnessed. Berquist (26) and Randall (ID played good cricket for their scores. Greer, of Palmerston North, was the chief contributor for his team with 45. Scores:—Shannon: .jW. Tremewan 3, P. Simcox 0, W. Berquist 26, J. Doidge 1, D. Harris 0 t J. Davies 3. L. Randall 11, T. Greatbatch 0, T. Ihle (not out) 0, W. Rice 0, T. Judd 1, extras 5; total, 51. Palmerston North 72. The players wish to thank LUesdames Berquist, Doidge, and Mr G. Hook, for their very capable services in preparing afternoon tea, and Mr J. Curran for cutting the grass on the cricket ground gratis.
