MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

POLICE AND MAINTENANCE OASES. The following cases were dealt with by Mr S. E. McCarthy, SAL, at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday: Several weok-ond inebriates were fined in smitd amounts, and two returned soldiers, who had missed their passage by the south boat were ordered to bo handed over to the military authorities. Samuel Costain, who had two previous convictions for drunkenness against him, was fined £3. Samuel Sparks, who did not appear, was fined 20s, for drunkenness, and 40s for damaging a police helmet. Ho was also ordered to pay 11s 6d, the value of the helmet. Percy Hammond, who pleaded guilty to stealing a barrel containing five gallons of beer, valued at £1 4s 6d, tha property of J. Staples and Co., Ltd., was remanded for a. week. The accused was not in a fit state to answer to tho charge. Frederick Blacklidge, for disobeying a maintenance order, tho arrears of which amounted to £TIO IDs 3d, _ was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, the warrant to he suspended so long as £1 per week is paid. The charge, which has now censed, was in respect to the support of four children at the rate of 3s per week each. The defendant was ordered to report to the police each successive Monday from February IstFrank Hallow, who had allowed a maintenance order against him to fall into arrears to the extent of £2f) fis, was sentenced to three months in the event of his fading to reduce the amount by £1 per week, commencing February Ist, Mr A r . B. AVillis appeared for the applicant. An application was made by Hannah Purcell for a separation order, with guardianship or two children and maintenance against her husband, Thomas Purcell. The ground for tho application was cruelty. The order was granted, and 30s per week maintenance allowed. Mr H. F. O’Leary appeared in support of tho application.
