“I find some difficulty in dealing -with irregular attendance in the country schools, owing to the shortage of farm labour, as the result of so many men having been called to the colours,” reported the Wellington Education Board attendance officer yesterday. “1 have numerous requests for boys to he allowed to remain from school to assist on the farms, and these oases are difficult to deal with. I am making it a practice to deal with every case on its merits, and in all oases I am making the very fullest investigation. I am afraid-, however, that the trouble will become more acute early nest ' year. Another difficulty brought about by the war is with the families of soldiers who settle near the military camps at Trentham and Featherston. In many cases the home has been broken up and the families come to reside near the camp, and the fact that the wives are unsettled in their future movements onuses them to neglect sending their children to school.” At his presentation at the Town Hall yesterday Mr James Ames, the city valuator, remarked that one of the greatest mistakes he had made was remaining so- long in the corporation service. If he had made a move 25 vears ago he was sure that in private business he woidd have done very well. Some people thought ho was a rich man, but as a matter of fact all he bad dene was to earn a living. At the end of 35 vears, for the important work he had been doing, he only got £250 a year. He considered that the majority of corporation officers were not nearly so well recompensed as they ought to be, and he advised young members of the staff to ‘‘make a move” at the first favourable opportunity.
