The "Sydney Morning Herald" describes the race for the Melbourne Cup a« the most exciting duel ever seen at Flemington. As the horses passed, I* l6 sheds Westcourt began fo emerge from tho ruck, and, getting a clear run on the outside, was just behind Almo and Broken Glass. Three furlongs from homo he moved un next to the tiring. Almo. As heads v.*ero turned for home Linglo and Wallace Isinglass put in an appearance, and the field bunched up. Before reaching the distance Almo beat a retreat, leaving Westcourt in command: but he lias immediately tackled by Lingle, and, clear from their followers. tho pair fought out a brilliant battle. Dingle was gradually gaining on the son of Bright Steel from the halfdistance, but MoLachlan kept Westcourt going, and passed tho judge’s line with very little to spare. Not until Westcourt’s number was hoisted did the majority know the winner. Tho "Daily Telegraph” describes the finish as most exciting. The pair went past the post locked together. The excited crowd stood up and called "deadheat!” After a tense silence the judge announced Westcourt tho winner.
