The bar at Patea has been unworkable during the last few days, which has resulted in delay to shipping. The Anchor Co.'s steamer Alexander is now not expected at "Wellington until to-morrow from "Wanganui. She is to sail in the evening for Nelson and West Coast. In his monthly report the harbonrroaster at Nelson said that the trade of the port, which, had been so con-

sidera-bly affected by the strike on the small steamers, had again almost reached normal conditions. The Poherua is due at Wellington about next Sunday with, a load ot coal from Wcstoort. The steamer Waverley will probably go up on the IVollirgton patent slip next Monday for cleaning and painting. A northerly gale and heavy a * Greymouth yesterday rendered the bar unworkable, and it was doubtful whether the Kamo would be able to sail last evening for Wellington. RIPPLE BRINGS WOOL. Richardson and Co.’s steamer Ripple, which is duo back at Wellington on Sunday from Napier via Akitio, is to bring a load of wool from the lastmentioned place. The vessel will sail from Wellington on Tuesday for Napier, Gisborne, and Akitio. HIMITANGI AT CHATHAMS. The vessel is duo back here from Wanganui on Saturday, and is to sail on Monday nfght for Havelock and bays. TO INCREASE ~TONNAGB. Every effort is being made in Prance and Italy to increase tonnage, and it is proposed in some quarters that England should supply all the necessary material, in order that the shipyards may build steamers to' replace those lost (saya “Fairplay”). While the British Government wonld be only too pleased to export the necessary steel, they have to consider first whether the boats can be constructed quicker in the Old Country. As, notwithstanding other claims on British shipyards, steamers can still be built in a much shorter time than in either France or Italy, it would be flalise economy to employ tonnage to take material which could be engaged to much better advantage in England in tho interests of the Allies. British builders have not sufficient steel for their own requirements, so that the Allies will have to go short. SOUTHERN ISLE SOLD. The derelict scow Southern Isle has been sold by the Marino Department to tho Nelson Harbour Board for £75. A quantity of gear goes with the vessel, which it will be remembered was found capsized and all her crew missing. At the last meeting of the Nelson Board it was decided that the matter of survey of tho scow ho left in the hands of tho chairman, who said the scow and gear might be used in connection with the Priestman dredge for work in the harbour. FIRST EAST COAST WOOL.
