RETURNED SOLDIERS

BEING SETTLED IN CIVIL LIVE

An interesting progress report covering t.lio period up till the end of.last mouth, Showing (ho position of returned soldiers dealt with by tho Digcfliargod Soldiers’ lafcninuatijon Department, was given yesterday by the Hon. A. L- Herdman, A-t----torn ev-Gonoral. The total number of men on the register of the department is 11.W30. Oi fihpsa 9109 have been disposed of as follow's :

(a) Mon who have work to return to, and have re-enlisted or returned to military dub- etc., 1055; (b) men plaped in amployment, 1953; (c) men who have signed "assistance not required," 2120, (d) left Now Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 156; (e) men wflio have not responded to repeated communications,and man who have accepted work the department found for them- but tailed to start work, 796; total, 9169. There are 1377 oases at uroseut under aoticn.; and 1574 cases are not ready for action. The latter include men who returned to New Zealand by recent transports. men convalescing, not ready for employment, and men not yet discharged 'by military authorities. It is interesting to note that there are only seven unemployed discharged soldiers in Wellington city and suburbs. In Dunedin there are eight, Christchurch 14. and Auckland 40. but of the latter the majority Were only listed recently. Piaptioulars .showing what has been done in the way of settling soldiers on the lan'd were furnished by the lit. Hon. W. F. Massey, Minister for Lands. There have been settled under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act 419, discharged .soldiers at ordinary ballots 13, by transfers (including wives) 20, members of Expeditionary Force (including wives) 57. A soldier who is fighting at the front, and who desires to take part in any bal,lot foi Grown lands, can do so through a relative or friend. Fifty-seven took up land in this wav. making , a total of 541., af whom 478 have applied for financial assistance. The record of tracing MI soldiers on the band up to date is regarded as very good under tho circumstances.
