LATE MR BEEHAN

ELOQUENT TRIBUTES IN PARLIAMENT. Many sincere and eloquent tributes were paid in the House of Representatives yesterday to . the memory of the late Hon. ‘William Beehan, ox-M.L.C. The Prim© .Minister moved that the House record its bight sense _ of the faithful service rendered to Now Zealand 1 by deceased and respectfully tenders to his widow its assurances of sincere sympathy in their bereavement. Mr Massey said deceased had always boon a loyal and whole-hearted supporter of the British Empire. He had two sons now fighting at the front,. The late Mr Beehan’s genial and kind nature gained him many friends, both inside and outside of Parliament.

Sir Joseph Ward said deceased also had a daughter in England actively engaged in war work. Deceased had been an ardent worker for social reform. H© was always keen to help on the work of friendly societies in Now Zealand. Sir Joseph expressed his deep regret at the passing array of a quiet, gentlemanly man who had always done his best for his fellow-m©n.

Sir John Findlay (Hawke’s Bay) referred eloquently to the late Mr Beehaa’s fine qualities. Ho was singlehearted in his devotion to his work in the Council. No man was more fully and widely loved than the late Mr Bcchan. IHo was sincere to the last letter, and the speaker was sure that bis memory would live even longer with those who know him than men who occupied a higher rank in life. The Hon. Arthur Myers, Minister for Munitions, and Sir James Allen, Minister for Defence, added their tributes and extended heartfelt sympathy to the late member’s relatives. Messrs AV. T. Jennings (Tauniamhui), J. S. Dickson (Parnell), A. E. Glover (Auckland Central), and J. Payne (Grey Lynn) also feelingly supported the motion. The motion of sympathy was carried and on . the motion of the Prime Minister the Honso adjourned until 7.30 p.m. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL’S TRIBUTE Similar references were made later in tho afternoon in the Legislative Council. Sir Francis Bell moved that the Council record its high appreciation of tho late Hon. Air Boehan’s scr vires, and extend its sympathy to his widow and family in their bereavement. Sir Francis said ho was sure every member of the Council must feel the loss as a personal one. Deceased was an intelligent and careful legislator, and followed undoriatiiigly the path ot public duty. Tho Hon. J. T. Paul and the Hon. A. T. Maginniiy Kclingly supported the resolution, which was carried. Tho Council adjourned until 7.30 p.m. out of respect to the memory ot tho lato member.
