STRIKE LEADERS CASTIGATED
DRAGGING LABOUR TO DESTRUCTION. MELBOURNE, September 30. The Prime Minister (Mr Hughes) last night attended a reunion of tho Bendigo branch of the National Federation. Ho severely caatdgajted the strike leaders and said they had made a bold bid to take from the hands of constituted authority the reins of Government. It was the work of these gentlemen, who were defeated on May sth. They never had tho welfare of Labour at heart. The strike loaders seized upon an excuse which was an obvious subterfuge, and had dragged the great army of Labour into a hopeloss struggle to serve their own ends. As one of tho past leaders of Unionism, bo was profoundly saddened at their defeat, but he hoped that out of it all would come a clearer and saner policy for Labour to pursue in thei future, and that those men who had led Labour to its destruction would be expelled from the movement.
