MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE AND CIVIL CASES. The following police cases were dealt with by Mr B. E. McCarthy, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday:— A young woman named Eileen O’Connor. 21 years of age, was charged with having in her possession on September 7bh at “Blairldgio” three pairs of shoes valued at XU 17s 6d. the property of Joseph Carpenter, well knowing tho articles to have been dishonestly obtained. Chief Detective Boddam, who prosecuted, applied for a remand stating that the defendant was at work on a sheep station near Masterton. On her arrival at Wellington she heard there was a warrant out for her arrest, and immediately came to the police station and presented herself for arrest. Ho suggested that in the circumstances the girl should be allowed bail in her own recognisances. Defendant was remanded to appear at Mas ter ton. bail being fixed at .£SO. George Vincent, George Andrews, Isaac Emms and Thomas Henry Weir, articled seamen on an oversea vessel, were each charged with unlawfully, absenting themselves from their ship without leave. Defendants. who pleaded guilty, were each sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment and ordered to be handed over to the captain of the ship upon his application. James Molnerney, a miner, who was arrested during tho morning, stood charged with failing to notify the .Government Statistician of tho change of his abode as required by the Military Service Act. Tho defendant, according to the evidence, had enlisted for .he sth Reinforcements. He went into camp and was finally rejected by the medical authorities as ho was suffering from miners’ complaint. Later he worked m tho Nelson district. Oa leaving ho notified the Government Statistician and received an acknowledgment to his communication which he produced in court. Some time afterwards he was drawn in the ballot, but did not receive any notification from the authorities to that effect, and was unaware of the fact until, he was arrested. In order that the police might maks further inquiries regarding the defendant an. adjournment was granted until to-day. Mr P. M. Jackson appeared for McInexney. , CIVIL CASES. Mr W. O. Banks, XI 10s. costs K 7s. . , A , In a defended action in Trhicli Andrew Bo:d'and Arthur John Scott, contractors, proceeded against Allan Smith to cover the sum of JE39, alleged to be due in respect of a concrete wall, the contract price for which was Xl9, and extras totalling X2O, the defendant, while ■admitting his liability regarding the contract repudiated that in respect to the extras. Judgment was given for plaintiffs for £l9 with costs. Mr AH. Hindmarsh appeared for the plaintiffs and Mr L. Neave for tho defendant. ~ ,
