INTERESTING MATCHES TWO GAMES PLAYED YESTERDAY. Further progress was'-rnado .yesterday afternoon in the ladies’ hockey games, when Canterbury mot Manawatu, and Wellington played Wairarapa, on tho Basin Eoserve. 1 CANTERBURY v. MANAWATU. This game was commenced at 2 o’clock and proved) to bo exceptionally fast, and as an exhibition of hockey was full of merit. On tho whole the teams were evenly matched, Canterbury having a littlo the best in weight, which is not a factor that counts for much except perhaps in close defence. From the “bully” Canterbury made a concerted attack, tho forwards being especially ( /T rc| minent. Miss Barr got well away, and by a well-directed shot drow first blood for Canterbury. Miss Korsel was -putting in some strenuous work for Manawatu, and through her good play Miss Corbett was given on opening. The pass was a good and welltimed one, and after Miss Whalley had galloped down ■ tho line with the ball she., centred to Miss Oollingwood, who found the net. The score being equal, both sides made play merry. Miss Gobbyn, in goal, was called upon to saveon several occasions from shots by Miss Green, and did her work well. One or two of the shots also missed the nob by a small margin. Canterbury returned the compliment ’by attacking, and when the position looked dangerous Miss Korsel came to the rescue of Manawatu and relieved the pressure by a -nice run along the line. “Corners” were given against Canterbury, and although the attack was good the defence could nob be broken down. Miss Green made most shots at goal, and shortly afterwards Canterbury carried everything before them, the shot at goal being splendidly warded off by Miss MoSweeney. Another shot by Canterbury received similar treatment. Then Manawatu had a turn. Miss Whalley made the opening and shot, the ball stopping in front of the goal. It was cleared, but the ball was soon back again, and Miss Kerslake had a shot from a good position, which was stopped by the goal-keeper. At halftime Manawatu were attacking. The second half of the game opened with on attack by Canterbury. Misses Whalley and Green were mainly responsible for relieving the position, and eluding tho opposition, Miss Green essayed a shgt which went outside the post. Play was first one end and then the other of tho ground. Manawatu had opportunities to. snore, but they were not taken advantage of. Canterbury on the other hand were more efficient in putting on the finishing touches to an attack, and from a passing rush Miss Pearce scored. Canterbury 2. Manawatu 1. This reverse acted as a further, stimulus to Manawatu, Miss Perrin dashed away with the ball, and when tackled passed to -Miss ■ Korsel, whose shot at goal was neatly stopped by the' goalkeeper. From a "corner* Miss Redder just missed registering a goal, and almost immediatijjy afterwards Mies Green found the net. Thera were only a few minutes to time, and a draw was certain. Miss Barr for Canterbury, however, made a final effort, and wetting well away reached the goal. Miss McSweeney fended the shot, but could not get the ball clear, with the result that Miss Richie scored. The match was won by Canterbury by 3 goals to 2 after a very fine game. All played well, Mrs Milos, the chaperon, for Canterbury, being very conspicuous. The referees were. J, C. Cusack and A. E. Webb. WAIRARAPA r. WELLINGTON. For the major portion of this gaum play was of an even nature. The first noticeable feature after the opening “bully” was a pretty passing bout by Wellington, in which Misses J. MacKenzie and Lang took part. Tho latter had a shot and missed. Then Wairarapa attacked, but did not reach Wellington’s circle. Later the visitors had several shots, scores being’ cleverly averted by Miss 'Skinner in goal. Miss J. Mackenzie. at fnll-baok for Wellington, initiated an attack by Wellington,-- and passed neatlv to. Miss S. MacKenzie on the wing. Miss Long made further progress, centred, and Miss Williams sent in a hot “one,” which Mjsa Tulley saved in approved fashion. Up to this* point Wellington had the better of the argument, but Wairarapa afterwards more than held' their own. Miss Knowles had a shot from the circle, which Miss Skinner drove away splendidly. Miss Williams received the ball, and passed to Miss S. MacKenzie. The latter returned it and it was sent flying into the net by Miss Williams. Miss Duley made an excellent run for Wairarapa, and a struggle eventuated at Wellington's goal. Miss Skinner cleared, and concerted action by Misses Lang, Geddes, and Grant saw Wairarapa defending. Miss Tulley being equal to the occasion saved nicely. Back came the ball, and Miss Skinner had a strenuous time averting scores from a number of shots. Presently Wellington wore in “full cry” for the opposite end of the field. Miss J. Mackenzie sent tbe boll well but to Miss S. Mackenzie, and the movement was completed bv Miss Geddes shooting Wellington's, second goal. ' In’ tho second half of the gam© an attack bv Wellington was turned into defence.; by Wairarapa, Miss Duley drove when close to the goal, but tho defence of the goal-keeper was sound. Miss Nix was handy and pushed the ball into the net. Wellington 2, Wairarapa _l. Further goals were shot for Wellington by Misses , Grant and Lang, and one -for Wairarapa by Miss Knowles. The game ended in favour of Wellington by four goals to.two. L. Jackson and T. H. Hodgson acted as referees.
