THE SHIPPING MERGER

BUSINESS MEIN'S OPINION. The following letter has been forwarded to the Prime Minister by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce: — I am directed by ‘my council to forward you this communication having reference to the recent shipping merger between the Union Steamship Company of Now Zealand and the P. and O. Company Mv chamber regrets that the Government was not aware at on earlier stage of the pending merger between the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand and the P, and O. Company. The chamber further realises that it is too late at this stag© to prevent the amaligumation which has taken place. "With regard to shipping between Now Zealand and Great Britain, the chamber recognising that the vital interests of this country are. inseparable from a fre-quent-and reliable service, together with reasonable freight- rates, urges upon the Government to ; assist and- acquire controlling interests in the . proposal to establish a Dominion Shipping Comr>anv as being the" only apparent safeguard for the future. . •' . ... Without control over shipping faciutios the chamber is of opinion that the development and prosperity of the Dominion will be seriously hampered and its chief industries continue to be subject to precarious conditions as the ie*nlt of depending solely on private enterprise.
