“BOOKIES” IN WELLINGTON
A QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. There was talk about bookmakers in Parliament yesterday. Mr R. A. Wright had the following question to put to the Attorney-General: If he will take immediate steps to restrict the illegal operations of bookmakers plying their calling in Wellington? Is ho aware that a number of hookmaking firms are carrying on their business without any interference from the police? Will he bake steps to cancel the following telephone connections held by bookmakers: Arthur Law, 2772; Scott and Martindale, 1940; David Ross, 57? Will he institute inquiries with a view of discovering the i number of bookmakers or their employees operating on a large scale in certain city hotels? Has he "been advised that a hugo volume of business is transacted by bookmakers in this manner? In view of the approaching race meeting at Christchurch will the Minister direct that special supervision be exercised with the object of limiting the present colossal operations of the bookmakers da Wellington ? Will ho also r ',tafce steps to prohibit any further;, .correspondence being delivered over the postal counter to R. N. Scott, Wellington, which name is a-disguise for Scott and Martindale, bookmakers, Sussex Chambers? •
