The auxiliary schooner Huia (Captain Mackenzie), which has not visited Wellington for some months, left Auckland yesterday morning with a cargo of explosives for New Plymouth, Wellington, and the South Island. The vessel should bo here about the middle of next ween. THE DAMAGED CUMBERLAND. Referring to the wrecked steamer Cumberland, the Sydney Shipping List” of July 28th says:— A message received from Eden yesterday states that owing to a south-west gale on Thursday morninjr the steamer Monmbula and toe tupj Champion were compelled to abandon work at the Cumberland, and returned to Eden. The bulkhead is completed, and pumping operations had been commenced. The weather is to anl the sea is calm again, and the boats returned to Gabo. It is expected that, given fine weather, the Cumberland will then proceed to Eden for repairs. THE HUIA’S MOVEMENTS. Tho coastal steamer Huia, which arrived back at Wellington last night from New Plymouth, is to sail at 11 o clock to-night for Lyttelton. Tho Richardson Co.’s steamer Ripple was unable to land all her Napier cargo on Thursday owing to wot weather, and therefore proceeded on to Gisborne, today the vessel will complete the discharge of her cargo at Napier, a .nd “f* ter loading will come on to Wellington, where she is due to-morrow. MONOWAI ARRIVES LATE. The Union Co advise that the Monotvai will now not arrive at Wellington until this afternoon from Auckland via Sorts The vessel will not receive any cargo at Wellington. She is fixed to sail at 10 o’clock to-night direct foi Dunedin. HIMITANGI AT CHATHAMS. Tho Chatham Islands Fishing Co.have been advised that their steamer Hnmtangi arrived at the Chatham glands on Thursday morning Horn W'elluigton which port she left at p.m. Monday. The company was also advised that the vessel will leave the Charhams for Wellington direct, probably to-morrow. WAKATU STILL DELAYED. The weather at Kaikoura continued bad yesterday, and the coastal steamer Wakatu was still detained there yesterday awaiting an opportunity to work her cargo there. Ft is anticipated tha the vessel will be able to land there this morning, and will reach, Wellington to-night. The vessel is to sail at 5 p.m. on Monday for Kaikoura and Lyttelton. THE HINEMOA. The Government steamer Hinemoa landed stores at Taiaroa Head and Cape Saunders lighthouses yesterday morning, and sailed for the Nuggets lighthouse where she will land this morning, the vessel will work Waipapapa Point lighthouse this afternoon and should reach Bluff this evening. Tho Hinemoa wdl leave Bluff next Wednesday evening for Centre Island. West Coast, and Wellington. THE MAPOURIKA. On her way back from Greymouth via ports the Mapourika left Nelson at 10 ftlock last night for •Wellington. The vessel is due here about 8 o clock this morning. THE NGATORO. The local office'of the Blackball Coal Co. advises that their steamer Ngatoro is due at Wellington about next Friday with a full load of coal from Greymouth. The vessel’s cargo will bo solely for bunkering work. THE CORINNA. The Union Co. advise that the_ Corinna is now not expected to arrive at Wellington until to-morrow from Un~. hunga and New Plymouth. The vessel will sail on Monday for Dunodin, Oamaru, and Timaru. INQUIRY RE DORSET. The Marine Department has decided that a magisterial inquiry shall be held concerning the foundering of the N.Z. Refrigerating Co.’s lighter Dorset oft Wanganui on Wednesday night. Ihe date of the inquiry, which will be held at Wanganui, has yet to bs fixed, and the nautical assessors will be appointed later. NEW SALVAGE COMPANY. A new company has just been registered in England with a capital of .£IOO,OOO in 261 shares, to be called the Ocean Salvage Cpmpany, Ltd., a title which will sufficiently explain its purpose. Tho first directors are Mr H. M. Grayson (chairman), and Messrs F. Dixon, J. W. Potter, J. Eaplen, and L. E. Thomas. With these personalities behind it the company is bound to take a prominent place in salvage operations. There is any amount of work to bo done at present, and underwriters will welcome the advent of a sound, strong, and well-managed concern.
