On of our few remaining old identities passed peacefully away fa Palmerston North, on Monday. August (ith, in the person of Mrs Slovens, rolicit of Mr James Stevens, of “Pondervis,” Petono. Mrs Stevens had readied the ripe old ago of SS. Sho lauded in New Zealand iu January, 1874. with her husband and ten children, two of whom predeceased her. Mrs ’Will Cummings, of Palmerston ■and Mrs IHUditoh-Kichards, of West Australia., Her unmarried son. Middleton Stevens, is serving with the forces at iSamoa, and her remaining family consists of Mrs P. H. Lynch, of Kumeroa: Mrs Donald Donald., of Mas-ter-ton; Mr PJ. Stevens, of Melbourne; Mrs A. Gower, "Pcndarvis,” Petono; Mrs S. Curt;e. Petone; Mrs Townshend, Palmerston: and Mrs Steadman, Melbourne. .Mu-,; Stevens was a native of Cornwall, England, and leaves a very wide circle of friends and relations .to mourn their loss. . The death has- occurred at' Orua Bay of Mr Charles 1 Panormo, at the age of 83 years. He was; one of the oldest settlers of the districts He left London in 18,52. and after spending eight years in Victoria. he came ; to Auckland, where, with his brother, ho .worked a sawmill at Orua Bay. During f.he Maori War the family built a blockhouse • to protect themselves from the natives. After the war he left New Zealand lor New Caledonia, where he took up farming and trading, returning to Auckland in 1892. Mr Panormo remembered hearing the minute guns of H.M.S. Orpheus when that vessel was wrecked on. the ilanukau Bar in 1863. Inventors are eccentric men. And make some wonderful things— From babies’ food and potent boots To sailing balloons with wings.
