LABOURERS’ CONDITIONS
PARTIAL AGREEMENT REACHED
At the hearing of the carpenters’ and general labourers’ dispute, which was continued at the Conciliation Council yesterday, the working conditions of labourers werefully dealt with, and m some cases amendments were made to the old award. It was agreed that country work shall mean work which requires the worker to sleepi away from home. It was agreed to allow the sum of 2s 6a per day for men away from home to provide accommodation. It was agreed that all sanitary conveniences be provided for by the employees. Suburban work shall constitute work done outside a radius of two miles from the To Aro Post Office, but which does not-come within the definition of country work. \Vorkers shall ne at the place of appointment, but should the place be beyond the two miles’ limit employers shall either pay the workers at the rate of three miles an hour for the time occupied by them in travelling by the nearest road used, by foot passengers to and from sucl; work in excess of twe miles, or shall pay their tram fare. No worker who resides within two miles by a road for foot passengers of the place where the work is to be performed, shall bo entitled to any of the allowances mentioned. , „ Overtime and holidays.—All time worked outside of, or in excess of the hours specified shall count as overtime, and be paid at the rate of time and a quarter for the first two hours, time and a half thereafter up to 10 p.m., and double time between 10 p.m. ana the ordinary time of starting next morning if worked continuously. Workare required to commence work between the hours of 6 a.m. and the ordinary time of commencing work shall be paid at the rate of time and a quarter. Work done on Sunday. New-Year’s Pay. Good Friday. Easter Monday, Christmas Pay. and Boxing Pay, shall be paid for at double ordinary rate. In regard to the employment of youths, it was agreed that they be employed in the proportion of one to five men. or fraction of the first five men* fullv employed. Their wages to ‘he Up to 17 wears 18s per week: up to 18’y® ar s £1 2s: up to 19 years £1 6s; up to 20 years £1 10s. The parties failed to agree on the preference clause, which was left to the court to decide. Application was made to join a number of other employers to the dispute. The Commissioner fixed August 16th as the date for the further hearing.
