COASTAL BOAT DISABLED
TAINUI TOWED TO PORT. The New Zealand Refrigerating Co.’s coastal steamer Tainui, 128 tons, Captain Dan Bonner, broke her tail slVit after clearing tih© Wellington heads last evening, and was towed back to port by the harbour tug KarThe Tainui left Wellington at 4.20 p.m. yesterday with a full load of 2000 cases of benzine, bound for Lyttelton. At 5.55 p.m. when the vessel was seven miles out from the heads the tail shaft snapped. Captain Bonner communicated news of the mishap by means of his Morse lamp to the signal station at Beacon Hill, Seatoun. Mr E. G. Zohrab’s ink Knraka left the wharf at 7 p.m., and at 9.15 p.m. had taken the Tainui in tow, the latter vessel haring drifted four miles with the strong north-westerly breeze. At 12.30 o’clock this morning the Karakn had the Tainui safely berthed at the King’s wharf. It is believed that the Tainui’s propeller has dropped clean off the break in the tail shaft being close up to the propeler boss. There is no eakage in the stern gland. Arrangements will he made to-day for the necessary repairs.
