PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
A meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society was held last evening in the Dominion Museum. Mr G. Hogben. C.M.G., president, occupied the chair. Dr C. A. Cotton, P.G.S., gave a lecture on "The Outline of New Zealand," illustrated by lantern slides. Miss P. Myers, 8.A., read a paper on "An Experiment in the Teaching of Fundamental Ideas in Geometry,” illustrated by diagrams. During the evening Mr Hogben exhibited , seismograms of the severe earthquake at Samoa on June 25th, as recorded at the Hector Observatory, Wellington. Peeling reference was made by the president to the good work performed by the late Mr Alex. McKay, Government Geologist, a - well-known member of the society for many years. The president announced that the council of the society had passed a resolution of sympathy for the IqjFe Mr McKay's relations, and appreciation of his scientific work. Dr Thomson gave an account of the late gentleman’s scientific work in geology, and numerous papers on the subject. He had also developed! new ideas on the origin of mountains. Mr P. G. Morgan, director of geological survey, added further testimony to the good work of deceased, and expressed regret that the New Zealand Institute had not thought fit to award medals to the late Mr McKay for his scientific work.
