SUB-LIEUT. LESLIE H. BRETT
KILLED IN FLYING ACCIDENT. ' A cable message received yesterday in Auckland bv Sir Arthur R. Brett from the Admiralty announces that SubLieut. Leslie H. Brett was killed in a Hying accident, on the'22hd dnst'.' ' Tie waLieut. Brett was 23’years iige. ,'llc was educated at King’s College, and' alter completing his course there" joined' the staff of the “Auckland Star." On tha outbreak of war, in August, 1914, he responded to the first call for volunteers, and was sent with the Expeditionary Force which captured ' Samoa. - I 'Having completed a term-oft-service there," / ha returned to Auckland-and received.his discharge. Being an experienced yachtsman and expert motorist, he desired to enter the British Naval Flying Corps,, and proceeded to England, whore lie enlisted in the Navy, with the rank of sub-lieutenant. Having completed hw l course at the Flying School, he was sent on active scrviice in tho Mediterranean, and while there was engaged in several aerial combats, in which his machine was hit, but he sustained no injury. On one occasion his machine came down in the sea, but bo was not seriously hurt. Another machine returning fro Hi the same engagement fell ; n ' n swjjnp, and the observer was killed. His death will bo lamented by a large circle of friends in Auckland. Two brothers of tho deceased arc also serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces—one left with t')*' Nineteenth Contingent, and another ig in camp at Trentham, on the eve of de r parture for the front. s
