MILITARY SERVICE BOARD

APPEALS HEARD YESTERDAY. ; The Third Wellington Military Service Board mot again yesterday, the members present, being Messrs H. J. Beswick (chairman), A. O’L. Coneidine, and M. J. Mack. Captain P. Baldwin represented the military authorities. In regard to the case of Ernest Arthur Bennett, general storekeeper, Northland, Sir John Findlay, K. 0., explained that the appellant when tho war broke out sold his business in one of the suburbs of Wellington and proceeded to England, where he immediately enlisted. He was, however, turned down on account of kidney troubkj, and was given to understand tth/sti there was no chance for him of seeing active service. He returned to New, Zealand with (two unmarried) Bis torsi, and they invested the whole of thnir available capital in a general storekeeping business. Assured by the medical certificate received at Home that he could not possibly be called up for active service, he had made no provision for somebody to take his place in tho management of the business. Ha was drawn in the ballot about a month, ago and _ called upon to go into camp some thirteen days later. The business had rapidly expanded, and tho whole responsibility rested on his shoulders. Four months* leave was asked for to enable him to instruct his bro-ther-in-law how to carry on the business. Leave was granted till September 19th.

In the cases of Herbert Norton and F. W. Sanders, clickers in the employ of, Hannah and Co., Ltd., the board agreed to an adjournment indefinitely, but indicated that) arrangements must be made for these cmxdoyees ultimately to go to tho front. Tho appeal of Hector Bewi Wood, farm hand, of Nairn street, wng allow-! ed, as he satisfied the board that he was under military age. _ I Appeals by the chief secretary of tho Salvation Army on behalf of Harry Chard, Basil Thomson and John Graham, Salvation Army officers, were adjourned indefinitely. j Tho employers of Arthur John Drew, 1 Robert Moncrieff and William MoKin< non appealed for their exemption. Drew, Moncrieff and McKinnon were shown to be seafaring men, and the board adjourned tho appeals indefinitely on the understanding that the men must remain in their present occupation. An appeal on behalf of Francis Dell, wireless operator, of Awarua, was similarly dealt with. An appeal by the Commissioner of Stamps for the exemption of Ernest H-. Barrett, stamp clerk, of Napier, was dismissed till August S2nd. A personal apneeJ by Barrett was set down for hearing at Napier, ( Appeals on behalf of Daniel C. Lane and Harry Speed, wireless telegraphists, were adjourned indefinitely. , ■ The board dismissed the appeal of Sergeant-Major B. J. Irvine, of the 29th Mounted Rifles, Fcathorston. It dealt similarly with an appeal on behalf of Robert Melville D. Thompson, dairy farmer, Eeikorangi. Thompson wan granted leave till September 19th. Private G. B. Bell, now in camp, was granted 14 days 'leave in October. | L. J. Williamson, chemist; Hataitai, H voluntary recruit, was allowed leave till August 22nd. The appeal of James Harper was dismissed, the appellant being granted leavo till August 22nd. i The board adjourned until 10 a.m. to-day. On behalf of the Guild, Mr 1 cmfwy. In the case of Arthur Joseph Giddens, second electrician tramway power house, ’ Wellington, heard on Tuesday, it stould be explained that this had been hoard bv another board and adjourn'd, for two months. Mr J. O’Shea, city solicitor, on behalf of the Tramway Department, said a man was in training to take Giddens’* place, but would not be efficient before another month. An extension of time accordingly was asked for. This was granted.
