MEAT INSPECTION
IS IT NECESSARY ? CASE BEFORE MILITARY SERVICE BOARD. At tho sitting of tho Third Wellington Military Service Board yesterday Mr F. S. Pope, the Secretary of Agriculture, applied lor the exemption of Charles Copcstakc. meat inspector at AVhangarci, exrJaining that ho carried on work of considerable importance. Though ho might bo spared at present with the opening of the, new season, ho would be very rnUch in request. In reply to Captain Baldwin Mr Pope stated that tho Government had to provide 100 inspectors, of whom only about half a dozen wore in tho First Division. „ . The chairman (Mr H. J. Beswick): The question is whether this man can serve his country best by S°i n S to tho front or by inspecting meat at AVhangarci. Supposing all tho inspectors Went to tho front? Mr Pope: Tho position would he that the public, including the soldiers at the front, would be subject to tho risk of consuming diseased meat. The chairman: After all it is only during tho Inst few years we have had inspection of meat. We got on all right in tho past. Mr Pope: That tho whole question of whether meat inspiection is necessary.
Tho chairman: Tho exigencies of the situation may call for Us doing without it to some extent. AVe are afraid the exigencies of the occasion aro not sufficient to warrant us exempting this man. Tho appeal will be dismissed, but leave will bo granted until August 22nd.
