RAILWAY RATES

NOT TO BE REDUCED DURING WAR. There is no present intention of reducing railway rates during the continuation of the war. The representations made in regard to petrol have, however, been noted, and will bo considered when the tariff is being revised. The foregoing statement was made by the Minister for Railways in replj' to a question by Mr E. Newman, member for Riangltikei. Mr Newman asked the Minister to consider the advisability of reducing the railway rate and make provision for traffic in petrol to be carried oa the railways.
