Abler, which was moored in, Hilo Bay, was seized by the United States authorities immediately upon the declaration of war, just in time to prevent her escaping and possibly turning raider. The engines and boilers of the Abler were put out of commission by the crew in the early days of February, and at the same time similar action was taken by the crews of practically all refugee German vessels. But in. the case of the Abler it appears that no permanent damage was done to the machinery, it being merely choked with cement. When, immediately following the declaration of war, the authorities went aboard the Abler, they found that the cement had all been removed, and the vessel was ready to put to sea. THE HIMITANGI. The steamer Himitangi, duo at Wellington early this morning from Dunedin, is to sail this evening for Lyttelton. From tho last-mentioned port the vessel is due again at Wellington on Sunday, will discharge on Monday, and will sail probably again for Lyttelton. NGAKUTA DELATED. Only one fireman was procured yesterday at Wellington to fill the vacancies for nine, consequently the Ngakutn was pnable to sail tor Greymouth. The captain of the vessel is in the meanwhile endeavouring to secure eight more men. THE KOTARB. The Dunedin “Star” says that the Kotare’s engines and boiler are unharmed. and practically the only damage is a leak in tho starboard side, at the turn of the bilge. The Kotaro was placed -in dock at Port on Monday afternoon, and an examination of her hull is now being made by Mr A. Morrison, Lloyd’s agent, and Captain Beaumont, Government superintendent for mercantile marine. A preliminary inquiry into the circumstances concerning the mishap to the Kotare will be held in Dunedin, but the exact date has not yet been fixed. It is expected that a report as to the full extent of the damage would be available shortly. The vessel will probably resume running in the coastal trade today. and is expected to sail on that day for Bluff, Invercargill, and Riverton.
