MIRAMAR BOROUGH
The fortnightly meeting of the Miramar Borough Council was held last evening in the Borough Chambers. The Mayor (Mr F. Townsend) presided, ana the. following councillors were present: —Messrs S. 11. Underwood, H. Hawthorn, W. H. Green, J. Pollock, and H. Iv. Eobertshaw. General and special rate* were fixed as follow The general rate was fixed at 2RI, for Hospital and Charitable Aid lid, special rate 3fd similar to last year. It was resolved to ■ merely receive a letter from the Hastings Borough Council in regard to the Nat. Beamish national development scheme. Recently a committee of the City Council recommended that the charge _ for running the trams to Miramar be raised; The town clerk of the suburban borough was instructed , 'to write to the City Council on tho matter, and protest against the proposed increase. So far no reply has been received from the City Council. It was stated that the present cost of running cars to Miramar was one shilling per Car mile, which the Mayor declared to be a paying proposition. This is deduced by a statement of expenditure of all the city lines up to March 31st, 1916. Figures produced by the Mayor showed that the Miramar tram service returned a profit of 15 per cent. Another aspect to be considered was that every passenger in the district travelled over an average of three city sections, and it was, therefore, necessary in the interests cf settlement not to raise the car mileage charge.
