GERMAN RETREAT PREDICTED

Sir Douglas Haig reports:—Early this morning the enemy delivered a. strong local attack on the positions we captured on June 14th, eastward of Monchy lo Prcux. After severe fighting, we were compelled to fall back from advanced pasts established in front of our main new jiosition, which we still hold, on Infantry Hill. We took prisoners during the enemy’s failure to regain our positions on Infantry Hill, Our troopers gained ground slightly in the direction, of Warneton Throughout the day there was mutual artillery firing in the neighbourhood of Lens and northward of Annentiores. The air fighting yesterday was again in our favour. We brought down ten German aeroplanes. Five others were driven down. Two of ours ar« missing. Military experts predict that the Gormans will he compelled to fall back, because the Ypros canal and river Lys are in the enemy’s roar. The British artillery is ceaselessly shelling the bridges across which the enemy must bring his supplies. The'British Staff are aware of the German plane. A wireless German message states: —There is lively artillery work on the Yser Canal and on both sides of Ypres and the Lys river; also between La Basse and the Sensee brook. British reconnoitring advances south-westward of Warnetnn, eastward of Vcrmellea and the neighbourhood of Loos failed. Throe British attacks eastward of Croisellos failed. A successful German enterprise resulted in increased French artillery activity in the neighbourhood of Cerny, also on. large sectors on the Aisne front, Western Champagne and Bulows. A French communique states:—There is marked artillery activity in the region of Laffaux, at Pantheon, and the Craonino-Chcvreux sector. Wo captured a. system of trenches forming a salient in the Champagne on a front of 500 metres. The Germans continue to bombard Reims, into which 2000 shells were thrown to-day. A number of civilians were'killed and injured.
