IMPROVEMENTS AT MELBOURNE. A letter has been sent to Sir Alexandev Peacock, the Victorian Premier, .bty the Oversea Shipping Representatives’ Association, expressing grave concern at the recent Cabinet decision to stop certain port improvement works because under war conditions there "as "no likelihood of vessels of increased tonnage and heavier draught coming to Melbourne." It is pointed out that foi some years regular vessels have been compelled to omit Melbourne as a port of call on the Homeward voyage owing lo the depth of water, meaning a loss of business to Melbourne. The associtaion believed thaf vessels of heavier draught would soon be in use on the Australian run. and that any failure to make the port of Melbourne as effective as possible would have serious effects.
