THE REGULATIONS AND THE MERGER. STATEMENT BY ACTINGPREMIER. Interviewed by a ‘-‘Times - ’ representative yesterday, the Acting-Premier (the Hon. Sir James Allen) .said: “I don’t think that the Government regulations regarding shipping have anything particular to do with the recent shipping merger including the Union Steamship Company. It is intended to protect the shipping that is registered in our own land. The Australians have got a very firm hold over their shipping, and it is only a reasonable thing that New Zealand should have a firm hold over tho shipping registered here. That the announcement of the regulations follows so soon after the announcement of the merger is a coincidence merely-’
