The Second Wellington Military Ser vice Board—Messrs J. W. Boynton S.M. (chairman), T. A. Bamhor, am F. Curtice—resumed their sittings a Parliament Buildings yesterday. Mr J. W. MacDonald (solicitor v the Public Trust Office) applied for es omptions for Leslie James Stanlp (clerk in the Public Trust Office Christchurch) and John Cleary Hogai (clerk in the Wellington office). Hoga. also appeared on his own behalf. Mr MacDonald said that the tot:, male staff at present in the Publ. Trust Office numbered 187. Of the.-. 15 were over military age ; 33 were r, the Second Division; CO in the Firs Division; and 73 were under ag< Highly of their staff were already a the front, and 30 were waiting to p into camp. Mr J. o’Donova.n (Police Comini; sioner) appealed for exemptions on b. half of Constables Hugh Blaikie (Ne Plymouth), V. Cosgrove (Lambic quay), B. Firmstone (Grey Lynn), t W. Gow (Palmerston North), Samm Gibson Hood (I'nvercargill), T. fc Kyne (Auckland), and P. J. Sawyc (Wellington). A reduction, Mr O’Donovan pointi out, • was constantly going_ on by nn resigning, principnlly to join the A my. Blaikie was in the Second Die sion.
Blaikie’s appeal was allowed. A tho other cases were adjourned, “r. date being fixed,” .the men to be e; empt from service meanwhile, so lon. as they remained in their present c< cupation. SUNDRY APPEALS.
Messrs Campbell and Burke appea ed for a temporary exemption To Daniel O’Leary, a foreman plumber i their employment. Four of tlici plumbers, stated Mr Campbell, wcv at the front, and a fifth was going h co camp, and in consequence The; would be short-handed. O’Leary wa villing to go into camp, but they wer; engaged on transport work for ti. Government and could not spare him They were trying to get plumber from Auckland, where they understooi the trade was slack. ■ ' hoard granted leave till Jun 18 th.
Messrs Johnston and Co. appealcfor a temporary exemption .for L. TJ Holland, an accountant in their en. ploy, Statipg that, they were just, a the end of their yeaf, and'his' service Lould bo very necessary'- till the cn of Juno. Eight men from their-chit' were already at the front. The cas. *,vas adjourned till Juno 30th, wili exemption in the meantime from military service.
The case of E. C. Mack, theatre manager, Wellington, was adjournci. till tlie 30th of April. Mr M. Luckie appeared on behal' of W. R. M. Pearce, farmer, Counst stated that appellant was farming 8(i acres, and had been turned down a unfit. An adjournment was grantee for the, appellant to be medically exan. ined. '
Wilfrid Stephen Haddy, carpenter Petone, appealed on the ground tha • ho had a conscientious objection tmilitary service. He stated, however that he was a Baptist, and the chair man pointing out that the tenets o' ihat Church were not opposed to mill tarv service, dismissed the case. Tho case of William Crawford, civi servant, Wellington, was adjourned un ;il tho First Division is exhausted.
The appeal of Geoffrey Anderson photographer, Wellington, was adjourned for him to he medically exam ined. In the case of Private W. Pinching. ' the 24th Reinforcements, who ap plied for a temporary exemption, or account of an ‘‘expected family inci -‘Tit,” the hoard recommended leave without pay till the end of July.
