HOROWHEHUA NOTES

FISHERMEN'S ADVENTURE. OTAKI, Saturday. Grave uneasiness was experienced in Otaki last evening when it was reported that two men—Messrs Archer (saddler), and Murphy (a native)—had been out fishing, toil the Otaki beach, and failed - to. return: to their, homes. Ihe two men went out early in the morning, and were seen by Mr Guldens about XX a.m. They were then out to sea, about a mile from the Otaki beach. Nothing more was seen of them. It was reported that the boat the men were in was an old fiat-bottomed one, that had been repaired frequently, and as there was a heavy sea running during the day many people feared that the boat had been swamped or had been broken up by heavy seas. Constable Satherley and a considerable number 'of Otaki people searched all along the beach, and inquiries were made at Te Horo. Waikanae, and Paraparanmu. but still nothing was heard of the missing men. This morning, however, word. was received from Mr Watson, fisherman, of Paraparaumu, that Messrs Archer and Murphy were safe at Kapiti. It appears that the sea was so rough that the men were unable to get back to Otaki, therefore they pulled for Kapiti, and stayed there the night. They hoped to get back to Otaki some time ' this afternoon or evening, though there is still a fairly heavy sea running. Much relief was felt in Otaki and district to-day when it was found that the men were safe, as the general opinion was that both had been drown<>d Constable Satherley was out practically all night, and went to a great amount of trouble in ascertaining the fate of the. men. , As the result, of a challenge match between the bowlers of Otaki and Otaka Railway yesterday, some very good games resulted, and the victors and vanquished fully enjoyed all contests. The Eailwayites were evidently below their usual, form, but the “townies were well up to form. Four games were played, the following being the results, Otaki being mentioned first in each ° a ßates, Anderson, H. Bright. Satherley y. Gooding, Webster. Kilmister, Olliver, 20—7. In this game Satherley s rink secured a lead of 10—1, and then ran out easy winners. Olliver s rink had the proud distinction of scoring on four heads only. _ , - Bills Low, A. Bright, Edwards v. Noble, ’ Young, Witchell, Windley, 15— 14 Although Otaki opened with a four and two singles before the Eailwayites had scored the game proved a good one, and Windley’s rink made up the handicap in good stylo, and scored on more heads than the opposing team Edwards’s quartette, however, secured two fours and a three. Bates. Anderson, Bright, Satherley v. Young, Witchell, Noble, Windley, 23 20. Although the challengers again suffered defeat they put up a creditable oame but their opponents played better. ’ Satherley’s rink scored no less than three fours. Bills. Low, Bright, Edwards v. Good, mg. Webster, Kilmister, Olliver, 30—18. This was another "cate-walk" for tho town players, who scored no less than three fours, a couple of threes, and three twos. Olliver’s rink reduced the gap bv securing a five towards the finish of the game. Otaki, 4 games: Otaki Railway, nil. Otaki. 88 points; Otaki Railway, 59.
