In the constellation of Hercules there is a small dull speck which looks like a star, but use a telescope of sufficient power and there is revealed one of the most •wonderful effects in aU the might j dome of heaven, The faint star breaks open into a sphere like a cluster of suns, and they ar© perfectly symmetrical in arrangement. From centre to circumference an inconceivably vast space is enclosed, and the mighty suns that make that sphere number 14,000, and have a diameter of 45,000,000,000 of miles. Let us suppose that the distance of each from the other is 9,000,000.000 of miles. Now, by analogy each and every one of these stars or suns—and it is a fair inference—are all of them the centres of separate systems of worlds like our own solar system. Match-making is a comparatively new industry. In 1860 following the periods of flint, steel and tinder, Godfrey Hanrkwitz. learning of the discovery of phosphorus and of its nature, wrapped some of it in a little roll of brown paper and rubbed it until it took fire. Then he held it to a stick covered with sulphur. This was the world's first match. Later sticks were dipped in sulphur and then in a composition of chlorate of potash, sulphur, colophony, gum of sugar, ;.nd cinnabar. These sticks were put up in n little box and were sent out with a small bottle of sulphuric acid. When the user desired a light he diped cne of the sticks_ into the - acid and it v ns immediately ignited.
