As a Scottish surname, Betbune, which is figuring in the British Law Courts in a romantic claim to a baronetcy, came originally from Artois in France. The Bethunes were an_ old seigniorial family who flourished at the beginning of the eleventh century, and in, the seventeenth century one of its members, Kippolyte dc Betbune, became Bishop of Verdun. The name supplies another link between past and present events, for It was a French poet, Quesnes, or Coesnes do Bethune, who was the first to plant the Latin flag on the walls of Constantinople in 1204 as a soldier of Baldwin I.
