A SUCCESSFUL DAY’S OUTING. CUP WON BY MISS DE VAL, From Our Special Reporter. CARTERTON, March 15. The opening of the Masterton Racing Club’s autumn meeting took place today in very hot weather. There was a very good attendance, and the racing was really good. The Cup winner. Miss Da Val, effected a surprise as far as tut punters were concerned, but she won easily enough. Several of the finishes were extremely close, and more than one could have been made a dead heat. During the day the totalisator handled .£16,377, compared with J316,17a 10s tor last year’s first day. The day s racing resulted as follows MAIDEN HACK RACE, Of 10Q sovs; five furlongs. The placed horses were the only ones in. the race. Birkenvale established a lead at once, and the issue was never in doubt, the gelding romping homo by two lengths. Time, Imm 1 3-asec. As they entered the straight Perfidy and Captain Glossop were going better than the favourite, and he fell pack. Miss De Val and Pacific Slope got the worst of the start, but the former ■was soon in the van with Tango At the back Tango led Miss De Val, Memo Gain. Pacific Slope, Devotion, and Ararat in that order, the last two running abreast of each other. Devotion moved HP at the bend, and followed the winner into ■ the straight, where Pacific Slope came with a rattle. Miss De Val had too many guns and stalled off the challenge.
