A visiting auctioneer, who was ope* raTTag in Masterton this week, adopted a novel and telling means of extracting kids from his audience (states a country exchange). Three articles were put up for which, after a lot of coaxing, he was offered £2 10s. Taking a £5-noto from his pocket in a dramatic fashion, he placed it on the table in front of the rostrum, and said, “I will throw this in to the highest bidder.” The audience at this pronouncement became keenly interested, and bidding was animated. From £2 10s the bids advanced to £B, when tho goods were knocked down; The auctioneer picked up the £5, and asked the purchaser to pay over the balance, £3, to his assistant. The ruse thus swelled tho afternoon’s takings by 10s, and the audience appeared perfectly satisfied with the fun provided.
